Barbara Kingsolver’s modern and unique plot ideas, complete with her mesmerizing analytical writing style has made her a favorite author among readers young and old.
A signature aspect of Kingsolver is her ability to work veritable moral messages concerning society into all of her novels, which seems to attribute to the attraction many readers feel towards her work. Delicately, she intertwines multiple characters’ lives, pasts and futures in order to point out sacred life lessons that apply to characters in the novels, and to the very people who are reading about them. Kingsolver also has a knack for describing scenes and plots of time so intricately that a reader almost feels as if they are actually in the plot, watching it unfold around them.
These characteristics of her writing combined with her transcendent and lyrical vocabulary fuses the reader into the plot and keeps a tight coil around them until the very last page.
One of her best known onvels, “The Poisonwood Bible”, tells the story of a pastor raising his daughters deep in the missionaries of an African village in the wilderness. Besides Kingsolver’s incredible accuracy with landscape imagery and the intensity the reader feels between the characters, it is evident that it is unlike the style of any other author. As the young daughters of the pastor are exposed to the traditions and lifestyle of the African tribe and learn to live the same life, their outlook on life is compared to customs and values in America, and Kingsolver is able to display how similar these detrimental values and lessons are in order to live in any community. It is fascinating how Kingsolver braids together two societies across the world, unveiling just how similar the internal values of different cultures are.
Kingsolver digs to the roots of true humanity and the values of family, society and one’s soul, creating a fascinating aura of meaning around her work.
Some of her best and most popular works include “Animal Dreams” , “The Prodigal Summer”, “Pigs In Heaven”, and “Poisonwood Bible”.

Michael [VHS]
$2.00 After the box-office success of Phenomenon, John Travolta continued to charm audiences with this 1996 comedy-fantasy in which he plays a grubby angel who's got one last good deed to do before heading back to heaven. Living peacefully in the rural Iowa home of an old, friendly motel owner (Jean Stapleton), the winged Michael (Travolta) is hardly the image of a perfect angel. He's scruffy, unshaven,... |

Mr Jones (1993) [VHS]
$8.60 Richard Gere is pretty convincing as a severe manic-depressive whose episodes of euphoria sometimes find him dancing on a two-by-four far above the street or climbing onstage during a symphony performance to "conduct" the orchestra. When the pendulum swings the other way, he is practically catatonic. As a character study, this film by Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) has its truly compelling moment... |

Murder on the Orient Express [VHS]
$8.01 Just the name "Orient Express" conjures images of a bygone era. Add an all-star cast (including Sean Connery, Ingrid Bergman, Jacqueline Bisset, and Lauren Bacall, to name a few) and Agatha Christie's delicious plot and how can you go wrong? Particularly if you add in Albert Finney as Christie's delightfully persnickety sleuth, Hercule Poirot. Someone has knocked off nasty Richard Widmark on this ... |

crossover fiction
An important aspect of writing is rooting your stories in believable fact. It is simply amazing how quickly a story can fracture if your readers collide with something they know can’t be done or is ‘out of sync’ with your story. Have you done your fact homework?
“Well, what if I’m creating something?” you may argue. That’s fine – but you still need to either logically build up to it, or at some point or in some fashion explain what it is or how it happens so your reader can make the connection. You may need to “tell” or “show” it – but you need to make it believable.
In psychology, if the gap between what a person knows and what you expect them to understand or grasp is too great, it’s called “cognitive dissonance.” If the gap can’t be bridged, the person falls back to what they know and are comfortable with – which means they may put your book down.
On your first draft, you may need to note placeholders for research, and then come back later to retool the section. This is a good method when you don’t want to stifle your creative flow. Sometimes you may need to stop and do the fact-finding because the results may significantly influence the direction your book is headed in next.
For example, in my book “Crossover,” moon phases became integral to the story. I had to not only learn about them but actually map out my story so that each moon phase logically corresponded in the time sequence. And some parts of the story had to be shuffled to fit with the moon phases.
The same happened when it came to fairy movement. When you’re 3 inches high, the distance you travel is a lot less than when your nearly 6 feet tall. Much as I’m not a great mathematician, I actually had to calculate distances based on a 3 inch stride – and modify my story accordingly. I knew that Algebra 2 class would come in handy someday!
Think of stories you’ve read and enjoyed – while you may never have given it much thought, a good writer is paying a lot of attention to underlying detail so that you “believe” what you’re reading – that’s true craftsmanship!
So, if you’re writing, I suggest you do “sweat the details,” but if possible not until after the first draft, so you don’t undermine your creativity.
