i need to know a science fiction book for 6th grader or fantasy so HELP!! i need it to do a book report so pleaz HELP

Susan Cooper’s “The Dark Is Rising” series are all great books. They are about a family of children, their uncle, and Will Stanton, a neighbor’s child. The second book in the series (enjoyable even if you skip the first) is also a Newbery Honor Book and a Carnegie Medal Honor Book. There is also some discussion about whether J.K. Rowling used some of the ideas in this book when she wrote Harry Potter.

A quick description of the second book (titled “The Dark is Rising”) from Amazon: On his eleventh birthday, Will Stanton discovers he is the last of the Old Ones, dedicated to fighting the forces of evil. Will searches for the six magical signs that will be needed for the battle between the Dark and the Light.

Amazon has a young reader’s fantasy and adventure section. There are a lot of good books on the list, including Half Magic, Magic Tree House books (if you prefer something extra short), the Narnia series, A Wrinkle in Time, etc.

If you prefer science fiction to fantasy, Robert Heinlein wrote a great young adult series. Have Space Suit –Will Travel is probably the easiest to find, but all of the stories are good.

$8.94

The Star Wars trilogy had the rare distinction of becoming more than just a series of movies, but a cultural phenomenon, a life-defining event for its generation. On its surface, George Lucas's original 1977 film is a rollicking and humorous space fantasy that owes debts to more influences than one can count on two hands, but filmgoers became entranced by its basic struggle of good vs. evil "a lo...

Steven Spielberg's 1993 mega-hit rivals Jaws as the most intense and frightening film he'd ever made prior to Schindler's List, but it was also among his weakest stories. Easily one of the best episodes from the original Star Trek series, "Amok Time" was written by the novelist Theodore Sturgeon, who came up with a story about a Vulcan mating cycle that occurs every seven years and drives the normally stolid, logical, pointy-eared humanoids wild. When Spock (Leonard Nimoy) is suddenly caught in the grip of pon farr, a crazy-making urge to mate, he sets a cours...

Le Guin, Ursula K.

without comments

Le Guin, Ursula K.

Sometimes the world that we live in can be discouraging.  In fact, if you let it beat you down it can be a little depressing. Without constantly renewing your mind, it can get the best of you. How does one stay upbeat and positive in the midst of a negative world? Using inspirational quotes can help uplift even the most negative situation.

A good inspirational quote can spur your mind on toward greater achievement.  In fact it can inspire you to do wonderful things with your life.  Without something to guide us, we will often-times feel lost.

Inspirational quotes are usually by wise people who have accomplished a lot in their life. These quotes give us the inspiration to try and accomplish as much with our life. Here is a great quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson. “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

What does this mean exactly? In my opinion it means that we should not follow the crowd. The easy way is to float through life meaninglessly. Most of us just kind of go with the flow and end up wherever the masses do. However, a select flew go in the opposite direction of the masses and achieve greatness.

This brings to mind another quote by Emerson, “The mass of men worry themselves into nameless graves while here and there a great unselfish soul forgets himself into immortality.”  This quote inspires me to move forward into greatness. We should always put the other person first. Never worry about what other people think or about the outside world. Focus only on the goal and you will be remembered in a great way.

Sometimes we get caught up in the rat race and forget to stop and smell the roses. We have to take time to enjoy the world that we’re in before it’s too late. This inspirational quote by Ursula Le Guin sums it up beautifully. “It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.”  We can’t take life to seriously…we’ll never get out alive.

Many of us go through life timidly. We’re afraid to bother someone or what others might think. Our mental boundaries keep us shackled into a limited existence. Through the use of inspirational quotes, we can break free from the bonds of the masses.

If we surround ourselves with beautiful inspirational quotes like the ones above, we can’t help but have a better attitude. Equipped with a better attitude, you’ll feel like you’re ready to take on the world.  If you have this attitude for a prolonged period of time, things will start to happen for you in a big way.

fiction sci fact

without comments

In recent years, science fiction movies have made a big comeback in Hollywood and I, for one, consider that a very good thing.

I like to be surprised when I go to the movies. I like to see things that I’ve never seen before and I like to be confronted by virtual realities that I did not even think possible. That’s why science fiction movies are my cup of tea.

They traditionally cover a wide range of subjects and themes, including several that are uniquely their own. Today’s trend in science fiction puts a premium on special effects, backed by today’s cutting-edge technology that can make even the most bizarre scenes seem realistic, such as alien life forms, spectacular battles in outer space, time travel or traveling to other worlds at the speed of light.

Often, science fiction films are purely speculative in nature and are peppered with recurring themes involving science and technology. Other prevalent themes in sci-fi movies are mysticism, magic, the occult and the supernatural, which are also key elements of fantasy or occult/religious movies. In fact, quite a number of films blur the line between these genre, such as Forbidden Planet, Chronicles of Riddick, and the Star Wars series.

It’s hard to define precisely what makes a science fiction film because the genre has no universally accepted definition. In fact, science fiction may vary from viewer to viewer in that what is sci-fi to me may be fantasy or horror to you.

If you’ve been a long-time fan of Hollywood, then you know that science fiction has come a long way. There was a time when special effects meant putting a toy spaceship at the end of a string and waving it in front of a camera or having someone dress up as an orangutan and terrorizing an entire city. Certainly, the special effects in science fiction movies have evolved from the downright laughable to today’s breath-taking and awe-inspiring treatments that seem truly realistic. Some of the great milestones in this regard are marked by films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Star Wars films, Star Trek: The Motion Picture and The Matrix.

Of course, science fiction films just seem to be getting better by the year, as evidenced by such recent hits as “Lord of the Rings”, “I, Robot” and “Superman Returns.”
