literacy web fiction
Close your eyes and imagine you’re on a beach straight out of one of those rum adverts. You’re in a tropical paradise surrounded by sun, sea and sand. You stretch out on your towel, liberally applying suntan lotion and reach into your bag for a good read. Out comes something the shape and size of a hardback, but instead of pages it has a screen.
You idly page through the scores of novels you downloaded from the Net before you came on holiday. And you idly rub your shoulder, reflecting on all the weight you didn’t have to lug through the airport because you weren’t carrying 20 different books. You select John Grisham’s latest lawyer tale, roll over on your front and begin to read. Five minutes later, thoroughly bored by legal blandness, you flip over to some Scottish swearing courtesy of Irvine Welsh. That’s better. Not so much a page turner as a real screen scroller…
This is the reading utopia promised by the en masse arrival of ebooks, heralded as the greatest revolution since the advent of the paperback. Most online book sellers enable you to download books or periodicals from the Net for a fee. They offer illuminated screens for night time reading and the ability to bookmark pages, make notes in the margin and search the complete text. No more pencil scribbles or dog-eared pages. Most are in Abobe’s PDF (Acrobat) format.
Already some of you will be squirming in your seats. Reading novels off a screen? Ridiculous. Who’d want to take a glorified laptop to the beach or in bed with them when they want a good read? The idea of reading a novel by Dickens from a screen is mad.
Maybe. But there’s a distinct method in the madness of the ebook manufacturers. The reason why they have emerged, is the ever increasing prevalence of the Net. Reading has become sexy again, thanks to the Web which, despite all the whiz-bang grooviness of animations and streaming audio, still remains a medium primarily of text and pictures.
People who complain about children not reading books forget that they’re spending an increasing amount of time online, reading Web pages, sending email and using search engines, all of which develop literacy. Thanks to the Net, more and more people are becoming used to the idea of reading from a screen, and computer monitors have come on in leaps and bounds in the last few years.
As such, the arrival of the ebook is the natural extension of this secret love affair with the screen. It’s easy to see why the ebook manufacturers are initially targeting students, academics and business people as their main audiences.
There’s also a distinct similarity between paperless books and the MP3 music format. Both technologies revolve around a different perspective of books and records. While we’re currently used to the idea of a record or book containing a particular chunk of information, technology is changing this.
The ebook and MP3 are moving towards the concept of the book and music player as simply containers for content, whether it’s literary or musical. You buy the device, then plug in only the titles or tracks you want.
Save trees, hug an ebook.

If you are hunting endlessly for a romantic vacation in Midwest to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city life or to spend more time with some one special, then Illinois is the place for you as it combines the best of the modern world and breathtaking natural wonders and serene environment.
The following are the best destinations for a romantic getaway vacation in Illinois:
Chicago
Couples will fall unquestionably in love all over again in this windy city. Although a modern and progressive city, there are still many areas where lovers can find their escape and privacy. Places that you must visit in Chicago are the Millennium Park Ice Rink, where you and your beloved can skate for free the whole night through; the Navy Pier, where you can join a cruise or simply ride the Ferris Wheel to get a good view of the city; and the Kiva Day Spa or Peninsula Spa, where you can enjoy utmost relaxation is a luxurious setting.
Aside from cruising, you must also visit art museums and enjoy a horse-pulled carriage ride, which will bring you to different romantic destinations in the city. For a spectacular dining experience, visit The Signature Room, which is located in the 95th floor of the John Hancock Building, for a bird’s eye view of magnificent Chicago landscape. Other restaurants and bars that couples should try while in Chicago are Spiagga, an Italian restaurant, Champagne/ Pop Jazz Club, for a sparkling night of music and dancing, and Geja’s, a petit cafe situated in Lincoln Park where you and your loved one can snuggle while enjoying a fondue fair.
Northern Region
One of the most romantic towns in Illinois, if not the whole country, is Galena. The minute you step on Galena, you will already feel romance in the air. With both luxurious and cozy accommodations and different romantic activities to participate in, you and your partner will certainly have utmost relaxation and unforgettable experience in Galena.
The first thing that should be in your itinerary when you visit Galena is the wineries, where you and your beloved could enjoy wine tasting. Other places that you must visit are the Galena River Trail and the Apple River Canyon State Park, where you can go hiking and bird watching. Horseback riding and a cruise on the Mississippi River are also activities you must not forget to try while in Galena.
If you are the daring type of couple, there are numerous outdoor activities you can do in Ottawa, Oglesby and Utica parts of Illinois. Try sky diving, hiking and swimming in the Matthiessen and Starved Rock State Parks, white-water rafting or river cruises, and other water-fun activities.
West
Couples who are not only interested in cuddling, but also in historical places will surely have the time of their lives in the western area of Illinois. Drop a visit to the home of Carl Sandburg, a famous Illinois-borne author, or President Ronald Reagan’s elementary school and ancestral home. Museums and art centers are also abundant in this part of the state. Be sure to try out famous restaurants in the area, including Alexander’s Steakhouse, Chez Willy’s and Rhythm Kitchen Music Cafe.
Southwest
Lovers who enjoy nature and at the same time the exquisite things in life usually choose a reclusion destination in the Southwest of Illinois. In this part of the state, you can follow a trail of wineries, including Schorr Lake Vineyard, and Ravissant, Hidden Lake, and Log Cabin wineries, and at the same time enjoy outdoor and recreational activities, such as hiking or sailing on Carlyle Lake. Historical places, such as the Cahokia Courthouse and Mound, Fort de Chartes, Jarrot Mansion, and Old Chain of Rock Bridge are ideal for those who like to learn from what the past has to offer.
For nightlife lovers, be sure to visit Casino Queen Hotel & Casino, which is along the Mississippi River, for fine dining pleasures or trying your luck with various table games and slot machines. Main Street Jazz And Blues, Friday’s South, and Popeye’s Chophouse are some of the best restaurants and bars in the Southwest.
Chicagoland
you are in for a treat in the so-called Chicagoland if you want to combine cuddling and nuzzling with discovering and exploring. Museums, art centers and theaters are abundant in this area. You and your special someone should not miss the homes and museums of famous and important persons, including Ernest Hemingway, Billy Graham, and Frank Lloyd Wright. To make your wife or girlfriend happy, be sure to pass by the Lizzardo Museum of Lapidary Art, a museum of gemstones and jewelries both ancient and new.

School is a boring place, you might hear some middle-school students say, filled with busy work and useless repetition. Philosophy or quantum physics for kids? No way – far more likely that they’ll be too swamped with mindless memorization and an over-structured system that cares more about test scores and rote learning than about understanding the world around them. But one educator, children’s book author Kimberly Wickham, of the acclaimed “Angels and Horses” book series, is seeking to change all that, not only through her books, but also through a series of school visits and speaking engagements intended to inspire young children to think “outside the box,” and beyond the cosmic lattice…
Kimberly Wickham’s philosophy, which she expresses in the three books of her “Angels and Horses” children’s book series, including Angels and Horses, Summer of Magic Horses, and the forthcoming Angels, Horses, and Other Worldly Lessons, is based on the law of attraction, a concept first brought to national attention with the publication of “The Secret” in 2007. According to this law, it is possible to change the universe for the better by affecting it at the quantum level – simply by positive thinking and excited inquiry about the world around us.
And nobody is more capable of inquiry, WIckham says, than children, who “have a natural capacity for philosophical thought.” Therefore, Wickham advocates a curriculum of holistic learning, teaching to a child’s skills and interests and challenging him or her to think critically and to enjoy learning, rather than merely “teaching to the test.”
Therefore, Wickham is launching upon a new schools tour, aimed at bringing the love of learning – and an awareness of the Law of Attraction – to the lives of children everywhere. The tour will kick off shortly after the publication of the newest book in the Angels and Horses series, “Angels, Horses, and Other Worldly Lessons,” this summer. You can find out more about Kimberly Wickham at http://www.kimberlywickham.com
Kimberly Wickham deals in selling children story books online including best fiction children books, child story books, short story books, classic children’s books and many more story books for child at affordable rates.
