Pulp Fiction is a 1994 film by director Quentin Tarantino, who cowrote the film with Roger Avary. A crime drama with a nonlinear storyline, the film is known for its rich, eclectic dialogue, its ironic mix of humor and violence, and its host of cinematic and pop culture references. The film was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture; Tarantino and Avary won for Best Original Screenplay. It was also awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. A major commercial success, it revitalized the career of its leading man, John Travolta, who received an Academy Award nomination, as did costars Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman.

The film’s title refers to the pulp magazines and hardboiled crime novels popular during the mid-20th century, known for their graphic violence and punchy dialogue. The plot, in keeping with most of Tarantino’s other works, is presented out of chronological sequence. The picture’s self-reflexivity, unconventional structure, and extensive use of homage and pastiche have led critics to describe it as a prime example of postmodern film. Pulp Fiction is viewed as the inspiration for many later movies that adopted various elements of its style. The nature of its development, marketing, and distribution and its consequent profitability had a sweeping effect on the field of independent cinema. A cultural watershed, Pulp Fiction’s influence has been felt in several other popular media.

fiction bad mother

without comments

Postpartum depression is a much more common problem than once thought with as many as 15% of new mothers suffering from symptoms of depression, bipolar disorder (also known as “Manic” Depression) to schizophrenia. Most cases of Postpartum depression are from new mothers, but it can affect a woman after any pregnancy, usually within three months after child birth.

Doctors don’t really know what causes this type of disorder. There have have been many studies done and there are a few theories as to possible causes, but no hard facts, as of yet. Below are some of the theories resulting from many different studies done on this condition.

Some studies show that it could be caused by a sudden, dramatic change in the level of a woman’s hormones. This is a distinct possibility considering that the body is taken from having such a large amount of hormones to literally being “brought back to reality” with her hormones returning to a normal level. This occurs very suddenly over the twenty four hour period following childbirth. This is similar to the mood changes a woman experiences when suffering from Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS).

Other studies disagree. They tend to believe that it has something to do with the dramatic changes in the person’s life by the stress of suddenly entering into motherhood. This is another possibility to consider as each person will react differently to different situations and different forms of stress.

Another study done shows that there are changes in thyroid hormones that bring about changes in women such as mood swings, anger, sadness and insomnia. This can be detected with blood tests and resolved by giving the patient medication to help get their hormone level back to normal.

Others say that the condition is brought on by the sudden shock of having all of the enormous responsibility that goes with having a child. Suddenly being responsible for the life of another human being is difficult for some women to grasp.

Another part of the difficulty is lack of sleep brought on by late night feedings and irregular sleep patterns, long periods of the baby crying and trying everything that they can think of to get the child to stop, without any results. This can bring on terrible feelings of guilt and thoughts of themselves as being a bad mother. This can lead to the mother feeling overwhelmed and helpless.

Another potential “trigger” to postpartum depression could be the amount of weight gain. This is a very sensitive topic for many women. Their self esteem could suffer from this, especially if they have a spouse or significant other that is not very supportive. They may have had high hopes of their body immediately returning to normal after giving birth, but may be faced with the reality that, for some, they’re overweight for the first time in their life.

These are all just theories of course and will be until medical science can establish the truth, based on facts.

If you or anyone that you know is suffering from what you think may be postpartum depression, please seek medical attention as soon as possible. There may be treatments that your doctor can offer that will be helpful to get you or your loved one through this rough time in your life.

vintage pulp fiction

without comments

The weeping, talking trees in Virgil and Dante suggest that the idea of communication with plants is of great antiquity, but only in the sense of transmigration of human souls into plants; the subject is not yet real plant intelligence in its own right.

Then comes the transitional example in the early part of William Hope Hodgson’s The Boats of the Glen Carrig (1907). In the chapter ‘The Land of Lonesomeness’ we are taken to an island in which there is a wailing during the night, and evil trees are prone to wrap their branches round the unwary traveller. The narrative suggests that human souls are somehow sucked into the trees and then beckon for more to join them. The sense of horror is peculiar and powerful. The atmosphere is that of supernatural fear, but the work can marginally count as science fiction.

Then comes the great age of magazine science fiction, and all sorts of portrayals of intelligent plants blossom out into the literature.

Murray Leinster’s ‘Proxima Centauri’, dating from the early years of pulp SF, depicts malevolent space-travelling plants attacking human explorers. A more subtle approach comes from the planet-wide vegetable intelligence in the 1931 story ‘Seedling of Mars’ by Clark Ashton Smith, where humanity is subjugated by the promise of Utopia. Raymond Z Gallun, another vintage 1930s writer, produced a more evocative variation on this theme in ‘Seeds of the Dusk’, where this time humanity is gassed to peaceful death by an alien vegetable invader in the far future. In this last story, the reader is made to feel that the removal of the last degenerate humans is no great loss to the world.

As a change from these threats, in Clifford D Simak’s All Flesh is Grass (1965) we actually enounter a benevolent (though somewhat ruthless) intelligent life in plant form, though the form it takes is that of a planetwide biological computer that works through photosynthesis, and is only outwardly similar to the plant life we know. All Flesh is Grass is one of Simak’s best novels, a joy to read. Proclaiming the brotherhood of all species in his gentle, humane, inimitable style, there is nevertheless nothing soft or flabby about it, and it contains plenty of excitement, menace and that impingement of a strange cosmos upon ordinary life, which is the hallmark of a certain subgenre of science fiction – what one might call the small-town cataclysm.

What of plant civilization considered in itself, without regard to its impingement upon humanity? For this you have to go to Olaf Stapledon, to the 8 pages in Star Maker (1937) in which he narrates the rise and fall of the ‘plant men’ of a small, hot, energy-rich world. The story of the beings he describes is dominated by the tension between their active night-time and their contemplative day-time natures. The balance is eventually lost, and first one, then the other nature predominates, leading to the doom of the plant men and their world. In 40 years of reading science fiction I have never come across anything remotely comparable in intensity to these 8 pages, as far as the theme of plant intelligence is concerned. It is a parable of universal relevance to all cultures, in the stress it lays on the vital importance of fidelity to one’s natural origins.

film pulp fiction

without comments

Here’s just a glimpse at what I consider to be great films of the last century. I know that not everybody will agree with these choices but as I say, these are personal and I shall try to explain my reasoning. Happy reading! They are in no particular order:

Shawshank Redemption

I saw this again last night on the television and absolutely love it. I find it extremely moving and unnerving. Andy Dufresne is a character I really came to admire and sympathize for. His unjust conviction together with his treatment in prison initially was terribly moving. My favorite scene is the one where he finds an old Mozart record and plays it out to the whole prison, locking himself in a room in the process. His little speech about how the punishment was worth getting to listen to Mozart really made me think that we are often trapped in our lives and routines and rarely stop to enjoy something. Great film.

The Matrix

OK, I’m a sucker for great action and this film delivers. What’s more is, this film is the first to ever suggest the concept that humans living on Earth may be part of some simulation or program. It toys with the ideas of fate, belief and reality which can often be extremely deep and confusing. My favorite scene is undoubtedly the bullet exchange in the high security building where Morpheus is being held and the way Neo struts in packed with tons of fire arms.

American Beauty

I absolutely love the soundtrack to this film. It’s extremely minimalist and peaceful and always seems to calm me down. That aside, the cinematography throughout the film was stunning; unusual for a small character driven film. The way the Lester’s character developed throughout the film was fabulous and yet plausible. What scares me is that many husbands and fathers go through a lot of the psychological steps that Lester goes through and could take action as drastic as his.

Pulp Fiction

What can I say. This film is brilliant! Totally love the characters brought out by Samuel L Jackson and John Travolta. Pulp Fiction is full of audacious, original dialogue; Tarantino’s ability to take what seem like minor conversational themes and dovetail them onto later exchanges for maximum comic effect is close to genius.

Hope you enjoyed this!
