Does the Shannara series by Terry Brooks get better after The Sword of Shannara?

I’ve read the Sword of Shannara and like most people, I found it difficult to get past the fact that it was so much like the Lord of the Rings story. I’m willing to give the series the benefit of the doubt though, based on any answers I recieve here.

I have read his books again and again. Yes, it’s very much like the rings series, but then you can only do so much to avoid similarities when dealing with elves, gnomes, dwarves, and other mythical characters. The books do take on a similar flavor, but Brooks also begins to break away from that mold later on. I think that you should try the next one and see what you think. His later series also have a similar flair, but break further yet away from the rings mold. You might try those. They follow the Shannara series, but can stand alone. They start with Isle With, I believe. I am a huge Tolkien fan, and though it seems so similar as to almost be plagiarism, I still love the books. Give it a shot, I don’t think that you will be disappointed.
