Greeley, Andrew

Why are there no “rags to riches” stories in Canadian History.?
Is it that there is no entrepreneurial spirit? Is it the restrictive immigration system? Why are there no Canadian:
Alexander Hamilton’s
Andrew Carnegie’s
Horace Greeley’s
Andrew Grove
Hell even Barack Obama?
Tommy Chong??? That’s the best you can do. Come on. 1st his beginnings weren’t really “rags”, his father was a truck driver. Second his “riches” weren’t made in Canada, they were made in the US.
I guess Canadians are touchy people or have a lack of reading comprehension.
Lets look at Randy’s list:
Scott Abbott – a sports journalist before Trivial Pursuit (not exactly a rags story)
Bombardier was born to a family of prosperous shopkeepers (not exactly rags)
The Bronfman’s Ha HA (they were wealthy tobacco farmers before entering Canada)
I could go on but I won’t have space. Rags to Riches means starting out of nonexistent means and making it rich. Randy, you should follow your own advice.
Well, Canada had deep British/French cultural ties. Change really didn’t occur until after WWII. British/French ties ensured that Canadian society was a class based society (hence the lingering issues of Quebec sovereignty even today). It was rare to “break out of” your class. After WWII Canadian immigration does not allow “rags to riches” stories. You have to have money, education, etc to immigrate.
Culturally, there is no country on the planet with a meritocracy like the US.
